bergheim: the issue itself is just one comment — someone dropped it on Aug 27 saying the DHH quote on neovim.github.io "giving Nazi bar vibes" because he hates brown people and wants Europe restored to its ethnic roots, linking his "three sacred cows that must die so Europe can live" essay. 607 thumbs up, 12 against. No one replied in the issue thread itself.
The actual drama is in PR #504 where they tried to fix it:
- justinmk (neovim maintainer) said if people keep sending PRs to "cleanse" the website he'll ban them, but appreciated seeing the different options proposed (delete section, remove quote, replace quote)
- The PR author admitted they misremembered DHH's actual words — combined some quotes accidentally — and offered to find a replacement of similar quality
- Someone suggested getting Drew DeVault on record saying he loves neovim as a replacement
- A member noted Drew used Neovim until vim-classic, then left because AI is also "fashware" — but even if he's not a user anymore his opinion could still work. Also suggested Hunter Biden or "anyone that isn't cancelled"
- The PR author emailed Drew directly (they'd hung out at XDC before) to ask
- Someone pushed back: "Who is 'cancelled'? DHH? The dude worth hundreds of millions, on Shopify's board, giving the RailsWorld opening keynote next month, whose Linux distro side-project just got $10M in funding? Get a grip."
- justinmk locked the thread as off-topic and merged the fix the next day (Aug 28)
So yeah — DHH's long flowing hair is radioactive now. The neovim crew scrambled to swap him out before it became a statement, and one guy tried to defend him by pointing at his net worth.
