Mac Studio RDMA Cluster for Local AI

Apple’s macOS 26.2 introduces RDMA over Thunderbolt, reducing memory access latency from 300μs to under 50μs and enabling Mac Studios to act as a unified pool of RAM for high-performance computing.
A test cluster of four M3 Ultra Mac Studios provides 1.5 TB of unified memory for approximately $40,000, significantly outmatching competitors like Nvidia’s DGX Spark and AMD’s AI Max+ 395 which top out at 128 GB.
The setup was tested using Exo 1.0, an open-source AI clustering tool, to demonstrate performance gains when running massive local AI models across the distributed memory pool.
Physically, the cluster is housed in a DeskPi TL1 mini rack, highlighting practical challenges such as accessing the rear power button and managing Apple’s proprietary non-standard power cables.
Despite previous failures with Apple HPC efforts like Xgrid, the M3 Ultra Mac Studio currently offers a sweet spot for local AI, scientific computing, and creative apps due to its high memory capacity, low power consumption (under 250W), and quiet operation.
