The High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) is a major upgrade to CERN’s existing accelerator designed to significantly increase collision rates and enable new physics discoveries.
- Project Status: Originally a design study approved in 2016, the project is currently under active development with data-taking expected to begin no earlier than 2030.
- Leadership: The project was led by Lucio Rossi from 2011 to 2020, after which Oliver Brüning assumed the lead role.
- Technical Goals: The upgrade aims to deliver proton-proton collisions at 14 TeV with a massive increase in integrated luminosity (up to 3 ab⁻¹ for ATLAS and CMS) to observe rare processes and improve statistical measurements.
- Experiment Specifics: Different experiments will receive varying luminosity boosts, including specific targets for heavy-ion collisions (lead-lead and proton-lead).
